about

A chance meeting in 1999 between Robert Auerbach, a restaurateur by trade whose father, Art Auerbach, ran San Francisco’s famous Jazz Workshop during the ‘50s and ‘60s; and Johnny Tucker at the Long Beach Blues Festival was the impetus for Auerbach to establish HighJohn Records. Why You Lookin' At Me (2002), the first solo album by Johnny Tucker, was HighJohn Records' debut release. Since then, Auerbach has continued to celebrate and support blues legends with subsequent releases by Tucker and also keyboardist Floyd Dixon. This 20th Anniversary Reissue reminds us of the exuberance of a young Johnny Tucker just embarking on his solo recording career, with the soulful blues style that has since come to define him as a premier progenitor of traditional blues.

He's a rare commodity as an electrifying vocalist & his songwriting technique is even more unusual-he puts together lyrics in the studio, listening to the band and singing words to fit the grooves. ... more
